Last-minute attacks, threats, and diplomacy shape fragile truce amid ongoing Israeli strikes

A dramatic 24 hours of escalating conflict preceded a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, announced by US President Donald Trump. Just hours before the truce, US forces struck Iran’s key oil hub at Kharg Island, while Israeli airstrikes targeted military sites, airports, and infrastructure across Iran. Tehran retaliated by hitting US-linked targets in the region and warning of further escalation.

The ceasefire, reportedly mediated by Shehbaz Sharif, includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and initiating talks in Islamabad. Iran signalled conditional compliance, stressing it would halt operations only if attacks ceased.

Despite the agreement, Israel has continued strikes, raising concerns over the truce’s durability. A call between Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump preceded the announcement. Global leaders have urged restraint as tensions remain high.
