Strait of Hormuz closure, Lebanon strikes cloud US-Iran ceasefire prospects

A tentative two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran has brought limited relief to the Gulf region, but escalating tensions continue to threaten stability. The truce, reached just before a US strike deadline, included Iran’s agreement to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. However, Tehran has since signalled renewed restrictions, citing Israeli strikes in Lebanon as violations of the deal.

The White House has termed the closure of the waterway “unacceptable,” urging immediate reopening, while Iran insists passage must be coordinated with its Revolutionary Guards. Meanwhile, Israel has clarified that operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon will continue, raising concerns over the ceasefire’s scope.

Fresh drone attacks, air defence activations, and rising casualties in Lebanon highlight the volatility on the ground. Diplomatic efforts are set to continue, with high-level talks expected in Islamabad in the coming days.
