Two days of relentless downpour cripple normal life; IMD warns of more rain across coastal Tamil Nadu.

Chennai woke up to a rain-soaked Diwali on Monday as heavy showers lashed the city for the second consecutive day, leading to widespread waterlogging and travel chaos. Visuals on social media showed flooded streets and inundated runways at Chennai airport, disrupting flight operations. Key areas such as Velachery, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, and Neelankarai were among the worst hit.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast more moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms across Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and adjoining districts. Chief minister M.K. Stalin reviewed the situation, directing officials to shift residents from low-lying areas and keep relief centres ready.
Meanwhile, train services on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway were suspended after landslides blocked tracks between Kallar and Coonoor. Several coastal districts, including Thoothukudi and Cuddalore, declared school holidays and warned fishermen against venturing into the sea. IMD said a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal could intensify further, bringing more rain.
