As Iran-US war chokes the world’s oil jugular, New Delhi demands seafarer safety and immediate de-escalation
With the Iran-US war throttling traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway carrying one-fifth of the world’s oil ,India has delivered a firm diplomatic message: attacks on commercial shipping are wholly unacceptable.
Addressing the IMO’s 36th Extraordinary Council Session in London, Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswamy condemned strikes on civilian maritime infrastructure, citing loss of lives and mounting dangers to seafarers worldwide. He underscored India’s direct stake the country supplies approximately 13% of the global seafaring workforce, ranking among the top three contributor nations.
Doraiswamy stressed the inviolability of freedom of navigation and urged all parties toward dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the escalating crisis.
The ongoing conflict has already triggered a sharp global oil price surge, amplifying economic anxieties across energy-dependent nations, including India.
