IMD forecasts simultaneous heatwaves and snowfall as March temperatures swing to extremes

India is experiencing a sharp weather divide this week, with the Indian Meteorological Department warning of heatwaves scorching the plains while rain and snowfall descend on the northern hills.

Delhi is bearing the brunt, with daytime temperatures running 5–8°C above seasonal averages and likely touching 39°C before a marginal relief arrives around March 14, when a western disturbance nudges in from the Himalayas. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra’s Marathwada, and coastal Andhra Pradesh are similarly sweltering under heat wave alerts.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are bracing for scattered snowfall and thunderstorms between March 10–14, offering a stark visual contrast to the parched plains below.

Eastern India : West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Sikkim faces thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds through Monday, adding a third weather story to an already fractured forecast.
