Former Supreme Court judge and delimitation panel chief to head the newly constituted commission; IIM-B professor and Petroleum Secretary join as members.


The Centre on October 28 approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Central Pay Commission, appointing Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Prakash Desai as its chairperson. The commission will review and recommend revised pay structures for nearly 50 lakh central government employees and pensioners.
Alongside Justice Desai, IIM Bengaluru Professor Pulak Ghosh has been named a member, and Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, will serve as the Member-Secretary.
Justice Desai, one of India’s most respected jurists, was the fifth woman judge of the Supreme Court and currently chairs the Press Council of India. She earlier led the Delimitation Commission, which redrew parliamentary and assembly constituencies.
Born into a family of lawyers, her father, the late S.G. Samant, was a renowned criminal lawyer. Beginning her legal practice in 1973, she later served as Chief Government Pleader in the Bombay High Court and Special Public Prosecutor in preventive detention cases.
Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2011, Justice Desai retired in 2014. Post-retirement, she chaired the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity and the Authority for Advance Rulings (Income Tax) before taking on her current roles
