With 95 UDF seats declared against LDF’s 130, key contests emerge in Palakkad, Nemom and Vattiyoorkavu ahead of the April 9 vote

Kerala’s assembly election picture sharpened Tuesday as Congress announced 55 candidates and ally IUML another 25, bringing the United Democratic Front’s declared tally to 95. The ruling Left Democratic Front has named 130, while the NDA has fielded 75 across all 140 seats going to polls on April 9.

Congress dropped sitting Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, facing multiple sexual assault charges, replacing him with popular actor-director Ramesh Pisharody for a high-stakes three-way contest against BJP’s Sobha Surendran.

Notable fieldings include Opposition Leader VD Satheesan in Paravur, senior leader Ramesh Chennithala in Haripad, and former MP K Muraleedharan in Vattiyoorkavu. Former MP Ramya Haridas gets Chirayankeezhu despite internal party resistance.

Seats for Perumbavoor and Thripunithura remain undeclared, with both incumbents mired in controversy or retirement.
