The engineer who ended Nepal’s darkness is now challenging political power with a movement of light and integrity.

Kulman Ghising
Kulman Ghising is no ordinary bureaucrat, he is the man who rewired Nepal’s destiny. Back in 2016, when he took charge as Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the nation was drowning in 18-hour-long daily power cuts. Within just two years, Ghising engineered the impossible: load-shedding was history. His bold reforms earned him the title “Engineer of Bright Nepal”, a symbol of hope in a country long accustomed to darkness.
Under his leadership, Nepal didn’t just secure energy independence, it became an electricity exporter to India by 2023-24. For the first time, NEA moved from chronic losses to profit.
But his refusal to bow to vested interests proved costly. In March 2025, Ghising was abruptly sacked after rejecting a controversial proposal to waive $180 million (24 billion NPR) in unpaid electricity bills owed by powerful industrialists. His dismissal triggered outrage, transforming him into a grassroots hero.
Riding on this wave, Ghising launched the “Ujyaalo Nepal” (Bright Nepal) campaign, drawing massive support from youth and diaspora communities across Bahrain, UAE, and Qatar. Today, the man who once powered homes is being seen as a contender to power the nation, as Nepal’s next interim Prime Minister.
