Operation ‘Ghazab lil-Haq’ targets Kabul, Kandahar and Nangarhar escalating a border feud into the region’s most dangerous military confrontation in years

Pakistan launched sweeping air strikes against Afghanistan in the early hours of Friday, February 27, killing over 130 Taliban fighters in what Islamabad is calling a decisive retaliatory operation. Codenamed ‘Ghazab lil-Haq’, the strikes targeted Taliban military installations in Kabul, Kandahar, Paktia, and destroyed an ammunition depot in Nangarhar province.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari was unambiguous: “No one will be beyond reach.” Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed the operation, declaring “Our patience has run out. Now there is an open war,” citing years of cross-border attacks linked to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad accuses Kabul of sheltering. Kabul firmly denies the charge.

The strikes follow Taliban “unprovoked firing” across multiple border sectors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday evening. Pakistan also baselessly blamed India for destabilising the region allegations New Delhi dismissed as “politically motivated.”

India, meanwhile, condemned Pakistan’s strikes, reiterating support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty during the holy month of Ramadan.
