From Yadav family feuds to eminent singer entering politics-1,314 candidates compete for 121 assembly seats across 18 districts

PATNA, November 6, 2025 , Bihar’s first phase of assembly elections commenced Thursday morning with over 3.7 crore eligible voters determining the political future of 1,314 candidates vying for 121 legislative seats spanning 18 districts. The electoral contest, which began at 7 AM, features several marquee battles involving political heavyweights and surprising newcomers.

Tejashwi Yadav’s Hat-Trick Bid

Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face Tejashwi Yadav seeks a third consecutive victory from Raghopur, a family stronghold previously held by his parents—RJD chief Lalu Prasad and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi. His principal challenger is BJP’s Satish Kumar, who famously defeated Rabri Devi in 2010 on a JD(U) ticket. Jan Suraaj Party’s Chanchal Singh adds a third dimension to this closely-watched race.

Deputy Chief Ministers in the Fray

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary makes a political comeback after 15 years, contesting from Tarapur against RJD’s Arun Shah. The BJP state president since 2023, Chaudhary hails from a political dynasty—his father Shakuni Chaudhary served six consecutive terms from Tarapur beginning 1985, while his mother Parvati Devi also won assembly elections. As a prominent campaigner and second-in-command of Bihar’s NDA administration, his performance carries significant weight.

Health Minister Mangal Pandey, a Member of Legislative Council since 2012 and former BJP state chief, makes his debut assembly election appearance from Siwan, marking a crucial test for the veteran politician.

The Singer-Turned-Politician

Twenty-five-year-old folk singer Maithili Thakur represents the BJP from Alinagar in Darbhanga district, becoming one of the election’s most discussed candidates. Despite criticism for being an “outsider,” Thakur who speaks fluent Maithili has roots in neighboring Madhubani district, though currently based in Delhi with her family.

Family Feud in Mahua

Perhaps the most dramatic contest unfolds in Mahua, where Lalu Prasad’s elder son Tej Pratap Yadav, now an Independent MLA and former minister, confronts his own party. He faces RJD’s incumbent Mukesh Kumar Raushan, LJP’s Sanjay Singh, and Independent candidate Ashma Parveen in a multi-cornered battle.
