President claims Asian rice imports hurt American farmers, considers additional duties on top of existing 50% tariff on Indian goods

Washington D.C. : President Donald Trump announced Monday that the US is considering imposing extra tariffs on rice imports from India, Vietnam, and Thailand, accusing these nations of “dumping” underpriced products that undermine American farmers’ earnings.

Speaking at the White House while unveiling financial aid for domestic farmers, Trump stated that cheap Asian rice prevents US farmers from receiving fair prices. He questioned his Treasury Secretary about potential exemptions India currently enjoys, learning that trade negotiations between both nations remain ongoing.

Trump has already imposed a cumulative 50% tariff on Indian goods including 25% specifically targeting India’s purchase of Russian oil under his “America First” policy framework.

The President also warned of potential tariffs on Canadian fertilizers, particularly potash, despite existing trade agreement protections. Canada supplies the majority of America’s potash fertilizers.

Industry analysts suggest the impact on India’s rice sector will be limited, as the US isn’t a major destination for Indian rice exports. However, exporters dependent on American markets face challenges and must seek alternative buyers.

The announcement comes amid mounting pressure on Trump regarding inflation and rising costs affecting American farmers and consumers alike.
