New Delhi signals solidarity with Abu Dhabi and pushes for de-escalation as Middle East crisis deepens

As Iranian missiles and drones rained down across the Gulf in retaliation for the US-Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Khamenei, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached for the phone.

In a call with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan whom he addressed as “my brother” Modi strongly condemned the attacks on Emirati soil, offered condolences for the lives lost, and reaffirmed India’s solidarity with the UAE during what he called “these difficult times.”

Modi also expressed gratitude to Sheikh Mohamed for ensuring the safety and welfare of the substantial Indian diaspora resident in the UAE a community numbering over 3.5 million and among India’s most strategically vital abroad.

“We support de-escalation, regional peace, security and stability,” Modi wrote on X, positioning India as a voice of restraint in an increasingly volatile neighbourhood.
