Mukul Roy, railway minister-turned-political veteran, dies at 71 after prolonged illness

Mukul Roy, one of the founding pillars of West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress and a former Union Minister, passed away in the early hours of Monday at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata. He was 71.
His son Subhranshu Roy confirmed that Roy died of cardiac arrest, following a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s disease and other complications. He had undergone three surgeries and remained hospitalised for over two years, spending his final months in a coma.
Roy’s political journey was long and layered. He served as Minister of State in the Shipping and Railways ministries under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s second UPA government. He briefly crossed over to the BJP between 2019 and 2021 before returning to the TMC.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh remembered him as an “experienced politician” who commanded respect across party lines, and offered his condolences.
