The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of consistently making remarks abroad that “undermine India’s interests” and portray the nation negatively. Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that Congress, under the leadership of the Gandhi family for over a century, appears to be influenced by “foreign directives” and accused it of acting as a “toy in the hands of anti-national elements.”
Trivedi cited Gandhi’s statements at international platforms such as Columbia University, Chatham House in London, Stanford, and forums in Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia, Bahrain, and the US between 2017 and 2023. He particularly referred to Gandhi’s 2023 Chatham House remarks questioning the silence of Western democracies on India, calling it “an insult to the country.”
Drawing a comparison with Mahatma Gandhi’s 1931 Chatham House speech, which held the British accountable for India’s suffering, Trivedi argued Rahul Gandhi’s tone was out of place. He contrasted Gandhi’s criticism with India’s achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting reports on digital transformation, AI growth, and the World Bank’s July 2025 finding that poverty had dropped to 2.3%.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, speaking in Colombia on Thursday, accused the Modi government of “attacking democracy,” warning that it poses a risk to India’s diversity and stability.
