Authorities warn of strict action against individuals creating false alarm for monetary gains; January data contradicts viral surge claims

Delhi Police on Friday debunked viral social media claims about a surge in missing girls in the national capital, revealing that the panic was being artificially amplified through paid promotions. After investigating multiple leads, authorities discovered organized efforts to spread misinformation for financial benefits.

“Creating panic for monetary gains won’t be tolerated, and we’ll take strict action against such individuals,” the police statement warned, emphasizing zero tolerance for those exploiting public fear.

Official data contradicts the viral narrative entirely. Delhi recorded 1,777 missing persons reports in January 2026significantly below monthly averages from previous years. The capital registered 24,893 missing persons cases throughout 2024 and 24,508 in 2025, indicating no unusual spike.

The revelation highlights growing concerns about monetized misinformation campaigns on social media platforms, where sensational content generates revenue through engagement and paid promotions. Delhi Police has promised stringent action against individuals and networks deliberately spreading false information to create public panic while profiting from viral content.
