Move aims to ease chronic congestion on Ring Road and north Delhi corridors

New Delhi: Delhi Traffic Police have recommended rerouting interstate buses from Kashmere Gate ISBT to the Dehradun and Eastern Peripheral expressways to tackle severe traffic congestion plaguing Ring Road and north Delhi areas. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Nishant Gupta submitted the proposal Thursday to the transport department and PWD, suggesting buses heading to Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir use the expressway network instead of current routes via Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and NH-44.

The existing route creates major bottlenecks at Chandgi Ram Akhara and GT Karnal Bypass, with congestion affecting Delhi University’s north campus and Azadpur Mandi. “Prolonged vehicle idling harms public health and delays commuters,” Gupta stated.

Under the proposed plan, buses would exit Kashmere Gate onto Ring Road, proceed through GT Road and Shastri Park, then access the Dehradun Expressway before connecting to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and merging with NH-44 near Sonepat. The recommendation follows advocacy by NGO Guru Hanuman Society of Bharat, whose study supported the route change. Transport department officials will review the proposal’s feasibility before implementation
