With ballots already cast in three states, India’s electoral marathon now races toward its southern and eastern finales

India’s 2026 Assembly election cycle is entering its decisive stretch. Voters in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry went to the polls on April 9, setting the democratic wheel in motion across five regions simultaneously. Now, the political pulse quickens as Tamil Nadu and West Bengal prepare to vote on April 23 and April 29 respectively.

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK is reported to hold a commanding lead ahead of polling day, positioning the ruling party as the frontrunner in what promises to be a closely watched contest. West Bengal’s battle is equally anticipated, with rival camps mobilising ground support.

The curtain falls on May 4, when vote counting across all five states will determine who governs these politically pivotal regions for the next five years.
