Over 3 crore voters to decide outcomes in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry; bypolls underway in three states

Voting is underway across several states and Union Territories on Thursday, marking a crucial day in India’s electoral calendar. Assembly elections are being held in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, alongside bypolls in Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura. Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm under tight security arrangements.

In Assam, over 2.5 crore voters are set to decide the fate of 722 candidates across 126 seats, with the contest largely centred on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s performance and the Congress challenge. Kerala’s 2.71 crore electorate will vote across 140 constituencies in a largely bipolar contest, while Puducherry’s 9.5 lakh voters will determine the fate of 294 candidates amid a multi-cornered fight.

Bypolls in Nagaland, Karnataka, and Tripura have also drawn attention, necessitated by deaths of sitting legislators. Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court cancelled the Goa bypoll citing legal grounds.

Elaborate logistics and security measures have been deployed to ensure smooth and peaceful voting.
