The death toll from Nepal’s anti-government protests has risen to at least 19 people with hundreds injured though local reports suggest casualties may be higher at 30 fatalities and 1,033 wounded. Dozens of protesters are receiving treatment in different hospitals in Kathmandu, including the Civil Service Hospital and Everest Hospital. The Health Ministry has activated emergency services with 28 hospitals across the country treating the wounded.

In a dramatic escalation, more than 13,000 prisoners escaped in jailbreaks during the unrest, with authorities working to apprehend escapees near border areas. One prisoner was killed and seven injured when army forces opened fire during an attempted jailbreak in Dhading.

Tribhuvan International Airport was closed on September 9 due to “unprecedented and serious” security concerns, stranding international travellers. Major carriers including Air India and IndiGo have cancelled all Kathmandu-bound services, with airlines offering rescheduling waivers Nepal-India bus services have also been temporarily suspended due to the volatile security situation.
