Things are very slowly coming back to normal across Nepal as crucial infrastructure begins partial restoration following days of widespread protests and violence.

The Bhairahawa Customs Office at the India-Nepal border in Belahiya has resumed limited operations after being forced to shut down due to vandalism and arson during demonstrations. Office Chief Shival Lal Nyaupane announced that essential imports from India, including cooking gas, vegetables, and fruits, recommenced Friday morning. Additional import-export activities will gradually expand based on the country’s improving situation.

Protesters had completely destroyed office equipment, computers, documents, and furniture in fires, necessitating a complete operational halt. With most records destroyed, services have restarted using manual paper-based procedures. Nyaupane acknowledged that while efforts continue toward full restoration, the extensive damage will require considerable time for normal operations to resume.

Meanwhile, 54 of the 740 inmates who escaped from overcrowded Bharatpur Jail in Chitwan have voluntarily returned. The Wednesday morning breakout saw prisoners overwhelm the facility designed for only 550 inmates. District Jail Chief Ravindra Dhungana reported escapees are surrendering gradually after phone calls encouraging their return.

Workers are clearing charred vehicles from Supreme Court premises ahead of Sunday’s scheduled reopening, signalling gradual institutional recovery, Supreme Court to resume work from coming Sunday.
