Record-breaking swearing-in draws national attention; focus on new deputies and NDA cabinet lineup

Bihar is set to witness a landmark political moment today as Nitish Kumar takes oath as Chief Minister for a record tenth time. The grand swearing-in ceremony will be held at 11 am at Patna’s iconic Gandhi Maidan, where preparations continued late into Wednesday under the chief minister-designate’s own supervision.

Governor Arif Mohammad Khan will administer the oath, becoming the eighth governor to do so during Nitish Kumar’s long political journey. The 74-year-old JD(U) veteran returns to power with renewed strength, as the NDA coalition has defied anti-incumbency for a fifth consecutive term. The JD(U) emerged stronger in the 243-seat assembly, securing 85 seats and reinforcing Nitish’s dominance in state politics over the past two decades.

All eyes will now be on the choice of deputy chief ministers and the composition of the new NDA cabinet, which is expected to reflect a balance of caste, region, and alliance representation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to the Governor as the current assembly’s term ends on November 22. The move formally clears the path for the constitution of Bihar’s 18th Legislative Assembly, which will take shape with today’s oath-taking of the chief minister and his council of ministers.
