Government clarifies biometric authentication is only required for LPG customers who haven’t completed it yet

The Union petroleum ministry on Tuesday moved to clear confusion around eKYC for LPG consumers, clarifying that biometric Aadhaar authentication is required only for customers who haven’t completed the process yet not everyone.
The clarification came days after a March 15 post suggested all domestic LPG consumers must complete eKYC, triggering widespread anxiety amid an ongoing cooking gas crisis linked to the West Asia conflict.
India has over 330 million LPG customers, including 105.1 million Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries. For PMUY customers, eKYC is mandatory once annually but only to receive subsidised direct benefit transfers from the eighth refill onwards. Non-PMUY customers who have previously completed eKYC need not repeat it.
The ministry assured that cylinder supply remains unaffected regardless of eKYC status, and the process can be completed free of cost from home.
