Playback legend Asha Bhosle dies at 92; eight decades of melody leave behind a silence no song can fill

India lost one of its most irreplaceable musical voices on Sunday as Asha Bhosle, the legendary playback singer whose career spanned over eight extraordinary decades, passed away at the age of 92. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, on Saturday following cardiac and respiratory complications, and was immediately placed under ICU care. Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the news Sunday afternoon.

Born in 1933 into the celebrated Mangeshkar family, Asha Ji began singing at nine and recorded her first film song in 1943. She rose to become Bollywood’s most versatile voice — from cabaret to ghazal, from folk to pop winning seven Filmfare Awards and two National Film Awards, for Dil Cheez Kya Hai and Mera Kuchh Saamaan. Her stature was rivalled only by her elder sister, the late Lata Mangeshkar.

The last rites will be conducted on Monday
