Norwegian Nobel Committee honors her “extraordinary civilian courage” in Venezuela’s fight for democratic transition

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy . The announcement was made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo on Friday.
The committee described Machado as one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times . The Nobel Committee stated that the opposition politician “keeps the flame of democracy burning amidst a growing darkness”
This year saw a record 338 candidates nominated for the prize, comprising 244 individuals and 94 organizations, marking a significant increase from 286 nominees in 2024 . Upon receiving the news, Machado expressed her shock at the honor .
The prize will be formally presented at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10, 2025. Machado’s recognition highlights the ongoing struggle for democratic governance in Venezuela, where she has led the opposition movement against the authoritarian regime, advocating for free elections and human rights despite facing significant political persecution and challenges.
