As Nepal searches for interim leadership following PM KP Sharma Oli’s resignation amid social media ban protests, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has emerged as a prominent candidate for the transitional government.

Born June 7, 1952, in Biratnagar, Morang district, Karki made history as Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, serving from July 11, 2016, to June 6, 2017. Her distinguished career began after completing her master’s in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University and law degree from Tribhuvan University.

Starting legal practice in 1979, Karki became Senior Advocate in 2007 and Supreme Court Justice in 2010. Her tenure as Chief Justice was marked by landmark decisions including women’s citizenship rights, police appointment reforms, fast-track court establishment, and aggressive anti-corruption measures.

Despite facing impeachment proceedings in 2017 over allegations of bias and executive interference—which were later withdrawn due to public support and Supreme Court intervention—Karki maintained her reputation as an uncompromising reformer.

Post-retirement, she authored two books: “Nyaya” (Justice), chronicling her judicial struggles and political pressures, and “Kara” (Prison), a novel addressing women’s social struggles and detention experiences.

Her anti-corruption stance and judicial independence make her an attractive candidate for protesters demanding clean governance outside traditional party politics.

Her track record of integrity and reform makes her stand out. Definitely a candidate who could restore some public trust.
