No warning, no explanation , just a 24-hour lockout that has users demanding answers from Meta
Thousands of WhatsApp users across India found themselves abruptly locked out of the messaging app on Monday evening, after their accounts were flagged “under review” without any prior notice. The disruption, which began around 8 pm IST on Monday, left affected users unable to send messages or make calls.
A notice displayed on the app stated that account activity and device information were being checked for compliance with WhatsApp’s terms of service, with results promised within 24 hours. The message also linked to guidance on “responsible use” and stolen-device policies, fuelling speculation about the cause of the mass action.
Frustrated users flooded social media platform X with complaints, many questioning why their accounts had been targeted despite no apparent violations.
Responding to the outage, a WhatsApp spokesperson told PTI that automated enforcement systems occasionally make errors, adding that the company works to quickly restore access when legitimate accounts are mistakenly flagged. Meta did not disclose the total number of accounts affected or confirm whether a technical glitch was responsible.
