Government orders probes into alleged irregularities, but protesters insist on CBI investigation

Ranchi, August 9: The Jharkhand government’s decision to act on alleged irregularities in the JPSC recruitment process has failed to satisfy protesting aspirants, who have announced that their agitation will continue until a CBI probe is ordered.

Student leaders said they would march towards the Jharkhand Assembly on August 10, maintaining that they were unwilling to compromise without an independent investigation by the central agency.

Jharkhand Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu said the government held three days of discussions with the protesting aspirants before deciding on measures to address alleged irregularities linked to the 14th JPSC examination and 2023–25 backlog recruitments.

According to Sonu, the government has adopted a two-pronged approach. The criminal aspects of the allegations will be investigated by the Crime Investigation Department (CID), while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will be approached to examine alleged financial irregularities and suspected illicit transactions.

The minister also announced that fast-track courts would be constituted and charge sheets against those found responsible would be filed within 90 days.

For broader recruitment reforms, the government plans to constitute an expert committee comprising representatives from IIT-ISM, IIM Ranchi and XLRI.

However, the students rejected the government’s proposal for a monitoring committee headed by a retired judge. They also demanded cancellation of the CGL examination.

Sonu said the government could not cancel the examination as it had been conducted in accordance with directions of the High Court and Supreme Court and remained under judicial monitoring.

The standoff is set to continue with students preparing for their Assembly march and reiterating their demand for a CBI investigation.
