Congress leader accused of distorting ancient text, misusing images of PM Modi and Yogi Adityanath
BJP leader and Supreme Court lawyer Nazia Khan has filed a complaint against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the Manusmriti, accusing him of selectively quoting the text to malign it.
Khan questioned why Gandhi displayed photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat while criticising the text, asking whether the BJP government had ever asked citizens to follow the Manusmriti.
The controversy stems from Gandhi’s remarks during the “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign in Pune, where he criticised what he called the “Manusmriti mindset,” urging students to reject patriarchy and asserting that women belong to themselves rather than to fathers, husbands or sons. He cited verses from the text describing women as being under male guardianship through life, calling them shameful.
Yogi Adityanath hit back, telling Gandhi to study texts like the Atharvaveda, Shatapatha Brahmana and Matsya Purana before commenting on the Manusmriti, and questioning his commitment to constitutional values.
The exchange has intensified the political sparring between the BJP and Congress ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
