Heavy rains in Bihar and Nepal push river levels higher, forcing authorities to intensify flood monitoring across several districts.
Bihar remained on high alert on Wednesday as relentless rainfall sent water levels rising in several major rivers, with authorities stepping up preparedness in vulnerable areas.
All 69 gates of the Sone Barrage at Indrapuri in Rohtas district were opened to facilitate the movement of excess water and ease flood pressure. Officials said continuous monitoring of rivers, embankments and sensitive areas was under way.
The latest Water Resources Department bulletin said the Kosi, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Ganga and Punpun rivers were flowing above danger levels at several locations. The Gandak crossed the danger mark at Dumaria Ghat in Gopalganj, while the Kosi was above the threshold at Baltara in Khagaria and Kursela in Katihar.
The Sone Barrage was releasing around 5.59 lakh cusecs of water, while discharge from the Kosi and Gandak barrages also remained high.
Several districts, including Patna, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Champaran, Vaishali, Madhubani, Araria and Purnea, reported flood-like conditions.
Officials said no casualties had been reported so far. Residents of vulnerable low-lying areas were moved to safer locations, while loudspeaker alerts and embankment inspections were intensified. Heavy rainfall in parts of Nepal has also contributed to the swelling rivers.
