Veteran actor urges the government to act fast to restore the film industry’s sense of safety

Mumbai, October 20: Veteran actor Rakesh Bedi has voiced shock over Sunday’s shooting at Tiger Shroff in Mumbai’s Juhu area. He suggested that extortion could be behind the attack and called on authorities to reassure a rattled film industry.

In an interview with a news paper, the Dhurandhar actor said Tiger’s father, Jackie Shroff, was an old friend and co-star. He described both father and son as easy-going and free of controversy, which he said made the attack all the more baffling. Bedi wondered whether something “not visible to the eye” lay behind it, and said he had no idea whether Tiger was linked to Salman Khan or planning a film with him. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which has claimed the attack, has warned film professionals against working with Khan.

Bedi said money was most likely the main motive, though ideology could also play a part if attackers saw someone as opposed to their views.

Stressing the seriousness of the incident, he noted that these were not empty verbal threats: shots had actually been fired, and such attacks had happened before. He urged the police, the government and other agencies to act to maintain law and order and rebuild confidence in the industry.

He added that constant worry over security, such as whether to step out and when, could leave actors living in fear and make it difficult for them to work.
