Film Federation of India Selects Drama Starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa for Best International Feature Category

Filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s film ‘Homebound’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2026, marking a significant achievement for Indian cinema. The decision was announced by the Film Federation of India’s selection committee headed by N Chandra. A total of 24 films had been shortlisted.
The Hindi-language drama features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor in pivotal roles and is backed by Dharma Productions. The film follows two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who chase a police job that promises them the dignity they’ve long been denied. But as they inch closer to their dream, mounting desperation threatens the bond that holds them together.
‘Homebound’ has already garnered international acclaim at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025. The film received a nine-minute standing ovation when it premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2025, demonstrating its powerful emotional impact on global audiences. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the film represents a compelling narrative about friendship, aspiration, and social dignity.
Producer Karan Johar shares, “We are deeply honoured and humbled that HOMEBOUND has been selected as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards… Neeraj Ghaywan’s labour of love is sure to find” international recognition. The film will compete in the Best International Feature category at the 98th Academy Awards.
The film is set for a nationwide theatrical release on September 26, 2025, allowing Indian audiences to experience this critically acclaimed work before its Oscar journey begins.
