Taxi operators assured full compliance; PAGIR delegation highlights disability rights concerns

LEH, Oct 8: Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta has granted Ladakh’s taxi operators a one-month extension to install Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD), following representations citing economic challenges. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways mandate had faced implementation delays over the past two-and-a-half months.
During discussions with Ladakh Taxi Operator Co-operative Ltd representatives, including President Thinlay Namgial, LG Gupta emphasized zero tolerance for further delays beyond the grace period. “VLTD installation enhances passenger safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance,” he stated, warning against disruptions in vehicle certification.
Operators thanked the Lieutenant Governor for his understanding, committing to equip all commercial vehicles within the deadline.
Separately, People’s Action Group for Inclusion and Rights (PAGIR) President met LG Gupta regarding challenges faced by persons with disabilities. The Lieutenant Governor highlighted ongoing initiatives including 3,591 Unique Disability ID cards issued, establishment of District Disability Rehabilitation Centres, and accessibility improvements in public infrastructure.
“Both Central and UT administrations remain committed to livelihood enhancement through skill development programs for divyangjan,” LG Gupta affirmed
