Left-backed students accuse Delhi Police of “brutality,” while police allege protesters broke barricades during a march demanding FIR against ABVP violence

Tense scenes unfolded at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday as protests by Left-affiliated student groups turned violent, leading to clashes with Delhi Police at the West Gate. At least 28 students were detained and six police personnel injured, officials said.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) were marching to demand an FIR against ABVP, accusing the RSS-linked student group of campus violence during general body meetings. Police said the crowd grew aggressive, broke barricades, and manhandled officers despite assurances their complaint would be addressed.
Videos circulating on social media showed students being pushed into police buses amid chaos. AISA alleged that JNUSU president Nitish Kumar and several others were “brutally beaten” and taken to Kapashera police station. The CPI(ML) Liberation condemned what it called a “brutal assault” on students “seeking justice, not repression.”
Meanwhile, former JNUSU leader and Congress member Kanhaiya Kumar accused the authorities of shielding ABVP members and condemned the “continued attempts to defame JNU.”
The standoff reignited debates over campus freedom, policing, and the political polarization of India’s premier university.
