Explosion in car near Gate 1 of Red Fort Metro in New Delhi ignites fire across multiple vehicles as authorities launch wide-ranging security response

A powerful explosion ripped through a vehicle near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in New Delhi on Monday evening, killing eight people and inflicting damage on surrounding vehicles. The incident occurring in one of the capital’s most sensitive and tourist-frequented zones, prompted swift deployment of fire tenders, ambulances and the Delhi Police’s specialised teams.
According to the Delhi Fire Service, the initial distress call came at approximately 6 : 55 pm when a car exploded, triggering fires in three to four other nearby vehicles. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of chaos as blaze-thick smoke billowed and street-lights plunged into darkness under the sheer force of the blast.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and elevated security levels across the national capital, citing the possibility of foul play. The explosion follows a major crackdown on a terror module just yesterday, when over 2,900 kg of explosives and bomb-making chemicals were seized and arrests made across Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.
Investigators from the Police’s Special Cell and forensic units are combing the scene for clues on the cause and nature of the incident. There has been no official confirmation yet of a terror linkage, but given the timing and location, all possibilities are being treated as active. Emergency services remain on high readiness and traffic in the Old Delhi corridor has been disrupted.
