Shallow earthquake at 10km depth sparks social media frenzy across eastern India


A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Myanmar on Tuesday, sending strong tremors across eastern India and Bangladesh. The quake, centered approximately 70 miles east of Akyab, occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
Residents across West Bengal, particularly in Kolkata, reported feeling significant shaking, prompting widespread panic. Neighboring Bangladesh also experienced noticeable tremors. Startled citizens immediately turned to social media, with queries like “Earthquake in Kolkata?” trending as users sought confirmation.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) data corroborated the event’s intensity and location. Social media platforms, especially X, flooded with anxious reactions from residents sharing their experiences and seeking verification.
No immediate reports of casualties or major damage have emerged, though authorities continue monitoring the situation across affected regions.
