A 63-year-old attacker, nursing a 20-year grudge, opened fire at a Jammu wedding before being overpowered by security

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a wedding function in Jammu’s Greater Kailash area on Wednesday night — the entire chilling sequence captured on CCTV.

The attacker, identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal of Purani Mandi, approached Abdullah from behind and discharged a shot at point-blank range as Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary were leaving the venue. Quick intervention by two J&K Police security officers an inspector and a sub-inspector deflected the shot and physically overpowered Jamwal, who was found in an inebriated state. A pistol was recovered from his possession.

Jamwal reportedly told police he had been waiting for an opportunity to target Abdullah for twenty years a statement raising immediate questions about motive and background.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, visibly shaken, said his father had “a very close shave,” while questioning how someone breached the security cordon of a Z-category NSG protectee to reach firing distance.

NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq confirmed all three leaders present Abdullah, Choudhary, and Nasir Aslam Wani were safe and unharmed.
