MP demands front-of-pack disclosure and ban on misleading imagery as packaged beverages mask sugar syrups as healthy drinks

Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha took the Rajya Sabha floor this Tuesday to challenge one of India’s most quietly persistent consumer deceptions packaged fruit juices that are, in reality, little more than flavoured sugar syrups.

Chadha pointed to a telling contradiction: bottles display vivid imagery of fresh fruits on the front, while the fine print on the back quietly disclaims that the imagery is purely for marketing. Millions of consumers, particularly children, are being misled into believing they are making a healthy choice.

The AAP MP linked habitual consumption of these high-sugar beverages directly to rising rates of diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle disorders. He called on the government to mandate front-of-pack high-sugar warnings, enforce honest product categorisation distinguishing real juices from concentrate-and-preservative blends, and ban visually deceptive branding.
