Beta version rolls out with faster checkout and repeat-booking features; full launch expected in coming weeks

New Delhi: Indian Railways has launched a new version of IRCTC’s online ticket booking website, aimed at making the experience faster and smoother for the millions of passengers who book tickets daily. The beta version went live at 9 pm on July 15, 2026, fulfilling an announcement Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had made last month during a visit to the Malaviya National Institute of Technology in Jaipur, where he told students the new site would launch by July 15.

The upgrade introduces four major improvements. First, a “smart captcha” system removes the irritating captcha checks during login and booking, along with unnecessary pop-ups and distracting graphics. Second, seat availability across all classes – sleeper, third AC, second AC and others will now appear together on a single screen, eliminating repeated searches. Third, a “faster checkout” feature cuts down the number of steps needed to complete a booking, reducing overall booking time. Fourth, an “easier repeat booking” option saves passenger details for frequent travellers, so names, ages and other information won’t need to be re-entered each time.

Passengers can access the beta site at irctc.co.in/eticket, and a direct link has also been added to the homepage of the existing IRCTC portal.

The primary purpose of releasing a beta version is to gather feedback from ordinary passengers before rolling out further refinements. IRCTC, launched in 2002, is among the country’s busiest online ticketing platforms, currently handling an average of 1.45 million train ticket bookings a day — a scale that made a full technological overhaul necessary.

The changes go beyond a cosmetic redesign. Railways is simultaneously upgrading its decades-old Passenger Reservation Engine in parallel, without interrupting live booking services even briefly ,a significant technical challenge. Once both the new engine and feedback-based refinements are complete, a fully functional IRCTC portal is expected within the next few weeks. Until then, passengers can use the beta site or continue booking through the existing portal.
