East, South Delhi Bear the Brunt as City Braces for Thunderstorms; Weather Set to Turn Dry from Tuesday
Large parts of Delhi were placed under a red alert till 2.10 pm on Monday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds sweeping across the capital.
According to IMD’s district-wise nowcast bulletin issued at 11.10 am, East Delhi is bearing the brunt of the red warning, with rainfall intensity expected to cross 15mm per hour, accompanied by lightning and winds gusting up to 30-40 km/h. Several other pockets of eastern and southern Delhi have also been placed under the red category, while western and central parts of the city fall under an orange alert.
The weather department has cautioned residents in the affected zones to expect multiple spells of rain through the day, along with intermittent thunder and lightning activity.
However, relief is on the horizon. The IMD has forecast a marked shift toward drier conditions starting Tuesday, with only a slight chance of very light rain in the afternoon. Wednesday may see scattered light showers, with isolated pockets receiving moderate rainfall between afternoon and evening. From Thursday through Sunday, the capital is expected to remain largely dry, with partly cloudy skies dominating the outlook.
As per IMD classification, rainfall is graded as light (up to 15.5mm), moderate (15.6-64.4mm), heavy (64.5-115.5mm), and very heavy (115.6-204.4mm).
