Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has agreed to serve as interim Prime Minister following deadly Gen Z-led anti-government protests that forced KP Sharma Oli to resign. Karki, 73, is Nepal’s first and only woman to have served as Chief Justice and is known for her tough anti-corruption stance.
The violent protests, which began over a social media ban and corruption concerns, have resulted in at least 19-22 deaths and over 1000injuries. The Nepali Army took charge of the country at around 10:00 PM local time to maintain law and order. Over 5,000 Nepali youths have backed Karki as their choice for interim leader, viewing her as a non-partisan figure capable of steering the country through this political crisis.
The protests represent Nepal’s worst civil unrest in decades, with demonstrators storming Parliament and attacking political leaders’ residences.
