Bollywood bids goodbye to the iconic actor whose comic timing and unforgettable characters defined generations; final social media post celebrated laughter and family.


Legendary actor Govardhan Asrani passed away on October 20, 2025, at the age of 84. Admitted four days earlier to the Indian Arogya Nidhi Hospital, he breathed his last peacefully. His final rites were conducted privately at Shantinagar Crematorium, Santa Cruz, honoring his wish for a quiet farewell.
A proud alumnus of the Acting Course at FTII, Pune (1966), Asrani appeared in nearly 350 films, including iconic classics like Sholay, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. His immortal line in Sholay, “Hum Angrezon ke zamane ke jailer hain,” remains etched in Bollywood history.
He debuted in Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan (1967) and gained recognition in Ramesh Mukherjee’s Satyakam (1969) and Guddi (1971). Apart from acting, Asrani directed six films in Hindi and Gujarati, including Chala Murari Hero Banne (1977) and Udaan (1997).
Married to actress Manju Bansal, the couple shared the screen in films like Aaj Ki Taza Khabar and Namak Haraam. His last appearance was in Dream Girl 2 with Ayushmann Khurrana, while his final two films, Bhoot Bangla and Haivaan, set to release in 2026, will feature Akshay Kumar and be directed by Priyadarshan.
In his final social media post, Asrani celebrated family, laughter, and gratitude toward his fans, emphasizing, “Keep smiling, it’s the best role you can ever play.”
Born in Jaipur, Asrani also worked with All India Radio and on stage before turning to cinema. Known for his impeccable comic timing and unforgettable characters, his legacy leaves a golden imprint on Hindi cinema.
