The Nayyi Navelli star will perform Ravan Vadh at Red Fort Ground on Dussehra as the Ramleela celebrates “Respect for Women

New Delhi, October 20: National Award-winning actor Yami Gautam will take centre stage at the historic Red Fort Ground on Tuesday, where she will perform the symbolic Ravan Vadh at the famed Luv Kush Ramleela on Dussehra.

For Gautam, the moment brings a scene from the screen into real life. She recently performed Ravan Vadh in her latest film, Nayyi Navelli. Now she will shoot the ceremonial arrow at the Ravana effigy before thousands of spectators.

Luv Kush Ramleela Committee president Arjun Kumar said this year’s theme is “Respect for Women”. He said the committee invited Gautam to represent the women of Delhi and the country, and to show that women play an equal part in the victory of good over evil. Women, he added, embody not just love and compassion but also the courage to stand up against injustice.

Kumar said Ravana stands for arrogance, injustice and the evils present in society. Having a woman perform the Vadh, he said, sends a strong message about women’s empowerment, dignity and respect.

The Luv Kush Ramleela, one of the capital’s best-known Dussehra celebrations, has a long tradition of hosting film personalities for the Ravan Vadh. Past guests include Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, John Abraham, Prabhas, Kareena Kapoor and filmmaker Rohit Shetty.
