Enhanced allowances for travelers and jewelry imports take effect today

India’s Baggage Rules 2026 came into force on February 3, allowing Indian residents and tourists arriving by air or sea to bring goods worth up to ₹75,000 duty-free, increased from the previous ₹50,000 limit.
The new regulations require original purchase receipts and prohibit minors from claiming exemptions. Indian residents who have stayed abroad for over one year can now import jewelry duty-free: female travelers may bring up to 40 grams of gold, silver, platinum, or precious metals, while male travelers are permitted 20 grams.
Crew members receive special provisions to bring chocolates, cosmetics, and gift items for family members, provided the total value doesn’t exceed ₹2,500. These reforms aim to streamline customs procedures while maintaining regulatory oversight on international baggage imports.
