L-G Saxena okays UT-wide unit as cybercrime complaints surge nearly 9-fold in three years
Leh, August 27: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved setting up a dedicated Cyber Police Station with jurisdiction across all of Ladakh, responding to a sharp rise in cyber financial frauds, online scams, digital arrests and identity theft. The notification takes effect immediately.
The station will serve as Ladakh’s centralised cybercrime unit, investigating offences under the IT Act, 2000, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other relevant laws. The move follows Home Ministry directives asking states and UTs to strengthen State Cyber Crime Coordination Centres for coordinated action against digital crime.
The unit will enable e-Zero FIRs, link with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and 1930 helpline, secure digital evidence, and act swiftly to freeze fraudulent transactions , while coordinating with the I4C, banks, telecom firms and other stakeholders.
Saxena said the step would protect citizens as Ladakh embraces digital banking, UPI and e-governance, ensuring a “secure and trusted digital environment.”
Officials noted that cybercrime complaints in Ladakh jumped from 43 in 2022 to 366 in 2025, with 1,077 cases involving roughly Rs 10 crore reported between 2021 and 2026. The station will operate under the UT’s L4C Chief Executive Officer, using existing police resources as an interim measure.
