Veteran actor suffers cardiac arrest at his Goa home; son Malhar confirms his passing

Panaji, October 8: Veteran actor Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s most intense and distinctive performers, died early on Thursday after a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. He was 75.
His son, Malhar Patekar, told local media that the actor was found unconscious and rushed to Manipal Hospital. Doctors tried to revive him for about 45 minutes before declaring him dead at around 5:20 am.
Patekar’s career spanned more than four decades across Hindi and Marathi cinema. He made his Hindi debut in 1978 with Muzaffar Ali’s Gaman. Through the 1980s he built a reputation for leaving a mark even in small roles, in films such as Ankush, Pratighaat and Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay!
His breakthrough came in 1989 with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parinda. His portrayal of the volatile gangster Anna won him the National and Filmfare awards for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to direct and star in Prahaar: The Final Attack, and won the Filmfare Award for Best Villain for Angaar.
His finest hour arrived with Krantiveer (1994), whose anti-corruption crusader Pratap Narayan Tilak earned him the National Award for Best Actor. Two years later, Agni Sakshi brought him a second National Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was conferred the Padma Shri in 2013.
His final screen appearance was in Subedaar, released on Prime Video earlier this year alongside Anil Kapoor and Radhika Madan.
