Opposition to corner Centre over Wangchuk fast, NEET leak and inflation; Amit Shah to move Vande Mataram protection bill in Rajya Sabha
Parliament’s Monsoon Session opens Monday for a 25-day run through August 13, with the Opposition expected to press the government on several fronts from the outset. Ahead of the session, the government held an all-party meeting on Sunday, drawing 58 leaders from 40 parties, including Congress, the Samajwadi Party, TMC and DMK.
Opposition parties plan to raise Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike, the NEET-UG paper leak, the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, price rises, and alleged theft of temple offerings at Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir.
The government, meanwhile, will introduce seven bills. The Lok Sabha will first take up the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, raising the court’s sanctioned strength. In the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah will move an amendment bill extending legal protection against insult to both the Constitution and the national song, Vande Mataram.
The session also marks the parliamentary debut of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, formed by TMC rebels, while MPs who switched from TMC to BJP will be sworn in to the Rajya Sabha. PM Modi is expected to address media at the Parliament House’s Makar Dwar before proceedings begin. This is the 18th Lok Sabha’s ninth session, with 19 sittings planned.
