Ukraine’s president says Indian delegation remained safe as Ukrainian fighter jets intercepted most of the drones

KYIV, Sept 4: Russia launched jet-powered Shahed drones while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was in Kyiv on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, adding that Ukrainian fighter jets intercepted most of the drones.

“Today, while the Minister was here with us in Kyiv, Russia once again launched jet-powered ‘Shaheds’,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X, alleging that the drones had been developed with Iran’s assistance.

Zelenskyy said the Indian delegation remained safe during the attack because Ukrainian combat aircraft were able to shoot down most of the drones.

Jaishankar met Zelenskyy during his visit to Kyiv, with discussions focusing on bilateral cooperation and approaches to ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine was grateful for India’s stated commitment to ending the war. He also called on major world powers to take a clear position in favour of ending the conflict and achieving a lasting peace.

In a separate development, Zelenskyy said Russian drones struck a Coca-Cola plant outside Kyiv, describing the attack as a signal to the United States.

The attacks on Kyiv reportedly injured 10 people, triggered a fire and severely damaged a high-rise residential building, according to officials cited by Reuters.
