Executive, assistant and junior engineers face disciplinary action after biker dies in uncovered excavation; safety compliance under scanner

The Delhi government has suspended three Delhi Jal Board engineers following a fatal accident in Janakpuri where a motorcyclist plunged into an unprotected construction pit early Friday morning. The victim died after falling into the deep excavation dug during ongoing line rehabilitation work near Janakpuri District Centre.

Delhi Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh announced the immediate suspension of an Executive Engineer (AXN), Assistant Engineer, and Junior Engineer connected to the Janakpuri Line Rehabilitation Project. The disciplinary action follows a preliminary review that identified serious lapses in on-site safety protocols.

Police received the accident call around 7 am, discovering the victim and his Apache RTR 200 motorcycle at the bottom of the pit. Photographs from the scene sparked widespread public outrage, raising critical questions about inadequate barricading, absent warning signage, and poor supervision at the construction site.

Officials emphasized these suspensions are interim measures pending a comprehensive high-level inquiry. The probe committee will inspect the accident site, review safety arrangements, verify compliance with construction norms, and assign responsibility for negligence. Investigators are particularly examining whether proper barricades, warning signs, and nighttime lighting were deployed at the hazardous location, as the accident occurred during early morning hours when visibility is limited.
