Remarks on Biharis and Kashmiri Pandits spark backlash; BJP MLA Ram Kadam says religion, community are “not subjects for jokes
Standup Comedian Samay Raina is embroiled in fresh controversy after clips from the latest episode of his show India’s Got Latent went viral, featuring remarks about Bihar and Kashmiri Pandits that many viewers found objectionable.
The row erupted after Raina released the new Season 2 episode on Friday, which included an exchange with stand-up comic Sharon Verma about their respective hometowns , Verma hails from Bihar, while Raina comes from a Kashmiri Pandit family. Social media users, particularly from the Kashmiri Pandit community, criticised the exchange, arguing that no community or region should be turned into a punchline.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam weighed in, accusing Raina of courting controversy purely for publicity. He said Sanatan Hindu Dharma and Kashmiri Pandits cannot be made objects of ridicule, adding that a later apology doesn’t erase the fact that the person has already gained nationwide attention through the offensive remark.
The same episode saw Raina mock TV personality Archana Puran Singh’s family vlogs, to which she sharply retorted that “abusing people is a talent” , drawing applause from the audience.
This isn’t the first time the show has faced scrutiny over its content and language.
