Opposition escalates its anti-SIR campaign as Delhi Police register 57 FIRs and Amit Shah reviews the capital’s law and order

New Delhi, October 25: The INDIA bloc is stepping up its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. It has announced a “public impeachment” of the CEC on October 30, to be followed by a “Dilli Chalo” march on November 1.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said on X that the impeachment proceeding, styled as a “mock Parliament” at Delhi’s Hotel Ashok, would deliver the public’s verdict on removing Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The march will end at Ramlila Maidan, and the Opposition expects at least a million people to take part. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has asked all bloc partners to be present in Delhi on both days.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav urged the Election Commission to act on thousands of affidavits his party has collected on alleged electoral malpractice. His remarks came after discrepancies surfaced in rolls for the UP Legislative Council elections. The state’s chief electoral officer attributed them to a software tool that translated names instead of transliterating them, and said only a small fraction of voters were affected.

The BJP brushed off the planned rally. Bengal minister Tapas Roy urged people to focus on the country’s progress and not let the Opposition weaken the nation.

Protest leaders, meanwhile, remain defiant. CJP’s Ashutosh Ranka said no bond could override the constitutional right to protest. AISA’s Neha Bora said she would not sign a peace bond, calling the evidence against her factually wrong.

Delhi Police have registered 57 FIRs over October’s protests, all now transferred to the Crime Branch, which is reviewing body-camera footage. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited police headquarters on Saturday to review the capital’s law and order.
